Tombstone Courthouse

Back to the album index

Built in 1882 after Cochise County was established the building stood as a symbol of law and order in the wild region of Tombstone.  It included the jail, courthouse, law library, and offices of sheriff, county recorder, county treasurer and board of supervisors.

Noted lawmen who served the county were Burt Alford, who vacillated from one side of the law to another.  Then there was a cattleman named John Slaughter who wiped out outlaws, rustler and renegades.  And let's not forget the Earps - lawmen, gunfighters, gamblers and saloon keepers.

The side courthouse was where the scaffold for hanging outlaws was constructed.  Renovated and turned in to a museum in 1959, the courthouse is worth a visit.
