Fort Matanzas
St. Augustine, Florida
Fort Matanzas is 50 feet on each side with a 30-foot tower.  It is built of coquina, the same stone use in the construction of Castillo de San Marcos.  Seven soldiers were rotated from St. Augustine for one-month duty tours at Matanzas.  The fort was constructed to control the Matanzas inlet fourteen miles south of St. Augustine and to prevent penetration to St. Augustine.
